Probably your fishing equipment, i.e. rods and rests, is loaded into your car by placing them between the front seats and into the passenger foot-well. Possibly you have had the misfortune to have a rod tip snap simply because the equipment has got in the way of the gear stick or hand brake. If you have a front passenger they normally get lumbered with holding the equipment to keep it safe. There is better and safer way.
